The Drama SEO Safari - Part 1
Hollie Gladden, JDA's SEO specialist
The Internet is an essential tool that most people use on a daily basis. Whether they use it for searching sports results, to find a holiday or to locate a certain product it is the quickest way a potential customer can view lots of information.
But why do certain websites appear first on the search engine you have chosen to use? And how do you get your website there without having to pay for advertising?
The answer to the above question is Search Engine Optimisation or SEO. You will probably have heard of this term, but you may not be quite au fait with the actual meaning. This is why we have developed a short guide written by JDA's SEO specialist, Hollie Gladden. Hollie will attempt to enlighten you about how SEO can be of benefit to your business.
The first instalment looks at what SEO actually stands for and goes on to explain the technical issues some websites face when it comes to applying SEO techniques.
Part 1: What is SEO?
The Internet opens up another opportunity for businesses to reach thousands of potential customers/clients. More and more people are going online to search for information, products and services. SEO can help potential customers or clients locate your website more easily.
SEO helps your website achieve high rankings, meaning that when a potential customer searches for a particular product or service they can find your website first.
But how does SEO work? SEO basically consists of two main components - a technical one which involves how your website is built; and a linguistic one which involves how the content of the website is written.
If your website is technically compatible with the search engine then you have the potential to reach thousands of customers. To ensure that the website is compatible you must ensure that it does not interfere in any way with the search engine's algorithm (mathematical functions).
The algorithm decides if, where and for what search query a website will be ranked on. If the website uses techniques to interfere with the algorithm it will not be ranked highly by the search engine and it could even face being removed from the search engine's index.
In next month's Update we will start to look at the most common problems a website faces in search engines and hopefully help make the whole process become much clearer!
